Though Kawasaki Heavy Industries is responsible for building a variety of motorcycles, its sports bikes are some of the most well-renowned in the industry.
When the company began producing Kawasaki Ninja sports bikes in the mid-1980s, it revolutionized the world of sports bikes by combining compact size, aerodynamic style and affordable pricing.
Released in 1986, the Kawasaki Ninja 250R continues to top the company's sale charts.
It is marketed as a beginner's bike, weighing just more than 300 pounds. This lightweight frame not only allows for the ease and agility needed by beginning motorcyclists, it also creates a sleek and speedy bike capable of racing at high speeds and cutting sharp turns.
Since its debut more than 10 years ago, the Kawasaki Ninja 250R has undergone several alterations further enhancing the bike's racing capabilities. According to company officials, the current model comes complete with a high-revving, liquid-cooled, in-line twin-cylinder four-stroke engine featuring dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder.
New Kawasaki Ninja 250R bikes typically cost between $7,000 and $9,000. However, fans can purchase used models for between $1,500 and $4,000, depending on the bike's condition.
Another sports motorcycle model, the Kawasaki Ninja 600R continued Kawasaki's trend for agility and speed both on and off the racetrack. It also spawned the Kawasaki Ninja 650R, which is still in production.
The Kawasaki Ninja 650R has a low center of gravity, which makes it easy to ride and quick to maneuver. Designed to improve upon the 250R and 500R models, it maximizes comfort with a new seating position and higher performance levels. After a detailed study on riding styles, Kawasaki developed a sophisticated human-machine interface. Kawasaki creators focused on enhancing rider confidence by narrowing the distance between footpegs and designing low-effort control mechanisms.
Kawasaki Ninjas have undergone several drastic changes in preparation for the 2007 season. For instance, only the 600 superbike model will be released. According to Kawasaki officials, the future model elevates 600-class power and handling to the next level.
The new Kawasaki Ninjas boast cornering speeds previously unknown to the middleweight class while retaining the wide spread of power. Key features include a previously unheard of power-to-weight ratio, digital fuel injection, improved combustion efficiency, a gear position sensor and a six-speed transmission.
With more efficient air ducts preventing water from reaching the air filter and higher torque through smaller throttle diameters, the newest Kawasaki Ninja model marks a milestone in sports bike technology which has become a trademark of the Kawasaki company.
