Motocross Races

Once a fun hobby, motocross has become a mainstream sport that continues to grow in popularity. Motocross races are one of the most exciting and competitive aspects of riding and can be extremely enjoyable. Although there aren’t any strict age requirements, keeping in shape is a major concern when riding. Anyone with the drive for success can take on competitive riding, so long as they know what they are doing.
The best way to get started with racing motocross is to start out riding on dirt trails in order to get a feel for riding. Nobody enters any type of race without having practiced first.
What types of motocross races are there?
There are several types of motocross races and competitions, depending on the event and the riding level. In general, a motocross race involves riders competing by trying to cross a dirt course with varying terrain the fastest. This can be anything from a somewhat hard ride through rough hills and turns, to an incredibly tough struggle leaving you drained of energy and covered in mud.
Motocross
Motocross format is an interesting style of race. In this format, riders run through two races or motos, combining their finishing position from both races. The rider with the lowest combined score wins. Should there be a tie, the winner would be the lower scorer from the second race.
An even more intriguing twist to this race style is the three-moto program. In this race, riders take three runs and combine their placement for all three, counting the third as double. This unique racing style adds a lot to the motocross format. If a rider does poorly in the first and second races, they can bring themselves back in the third race. Otherwise if a rider does very well in the first two races, they will need to perform well in the third if they want to keep a good score. This system keeps the overall placement a true surprise until the third race is over.
Arenacross
This motocross format is on a man made course setup inside an arena. These are very tight, strenuous courses meant to test a rider's skill and technique.
Dirt Track
This is a traditional style of racing where riders compete in four types of events: oval, short track, half-mile and mile, and TT courses, including at least one right turn and a jump.
Road Racing
Slightly different than most races, this takes place on paved tracks.
Supermoto
A new yet interesting hybrid competition, Supermoto involves motocross bikes modified with road-race-type tires. These courses are made up of both paved and dirt sections, usually including jumps and other obstacles.
Enduro
Taking place on an off-road trail, Enduros are a good way to get started in competitive riding. Here riders are flagged off in one minute intervals and expected to take the course while keeping an average speed.
Hare Scramble
This involves riding a designated number of laps across a long, marked loop course consisting of tough natural terrain. It demands physical strength and endurance from a rider, as it can last for hours.
Hare and Hound
Instead of running laps, this race takes places across a 40 mile-long course made up of natural terrain.
Drag Racing
A race to get across a quarter mile track the fastest, speed and acceleration are key.
Dirt Drag Racing
Similar to drag racing, this takes place on a dirt track. Traction becomes more of a factor in order to survive.
Hillclimb
Here a rider has at least two attempts to work their way up the face of a challenging hill. The winner is the rider who either makes it to the top the fastest, or the person who climbs up the farthest if nobody reaches the top.
Observed Trials
A competition where riders must overcome incredibly tough sections of terrain without touching their feet to the ground. This can be made up of both natural and man made obstacles.
Land Speed Record Trials
This takes place across miles-long courses made up of flat terrain. The objective is to get the highest speed possible, hopefully reaching higher speeds than anyone has achieved before.
Speedway
Here the racers ride across incredibly short oval dirt tracks, normally lasting around 4 laps.
Ice Racing
Similar to a Dirt Track race, riders compete across a track on frozen lakes or ponds. Bikes are modified to hold better traction while moving across the ice as fast as possible.
Different motocross races require varying riding levels, so be sure you are up to the challenge before riding into an advanced event. Like any other sport, motocross races take patience and training to move up in skill level.
