ATV Motocross

Like motocross events, ATV racing is becoming more and more popular in the sports community. Unlike a regular motocross competition where riders compete using motorcycles, the vehicles used in ATV Motocross are four-wheeled. ATVs or All Terrain Vehicles are more commonly known as four-wheelers or quads. They use low pressure tires with a seat straddled by the rider similar to a bicycle or motorcycle and controlled with handlebars.

While ATV motocross might seem easier than traditional motocross, it is still a very dangerous sport requiring a lot of skill and technique. Although they need less balance handling than a motocross bike, ATVs are bigger and heavier, making them harder to control.

Like traditional motocross bikes, ATVs have several races and competitions. Each one unique in its own way.

ATV Motocross
An ATV motocross competition is a true test of a rider's speed and skill. This takes place on a closed course made up of both natural and man-made obstacles. The motocross format is an interesting type of competition. Here riders run through two separate races, also known as motos, and combine both the totals of their finishing position. The rider with the lowest score wins. In the case of a tie, the winner is the rider with the lower score from the second race.

In a three-moto program, riders take three runs to combine their placement for all three, with the third moto counting as double. This adds some excitement and surprise to the event. If a rider should do poorly in the first or second race, they can still make a comeback in the third race. However, if they score very well in the first two races, they will still need to perform well in the third in order to maintain a good score. Nobody knows the final scores until the third race is finished.

TT (Tourist Trophy)
This event takes place on a prepared dirt track made up of right and left turns as well as jumps. Normally a qualifying race will be required to determine who can take part in the championship race. The winner is based on placement in the championship event.

Short Track
These races run on an oval dirt track, 3/8 of a mile in length.

Cross Country & Hare Scramble
Typically lasting one or two hours, these events run on tough natural terrain, either with a set amount of laps or predetermined time. Riders need not only skill, but physical endurance to take on this type of competition.

Ice Racing
A less popular style of ATV motocross competition, this takes place on frozen lakes or ponds. Normally an ice racing course is made up of a short oval, but occasionally they can include TT races with left and right turns.

Riding in ATV motocross races or competitions can be fun but also very dangerous. The rider assumes all risks when taking on an ATV challenge. It is best to use good judgment and only ride at a comfortable level.
